Taming an unruly closet

This is a pretty interesting project that hi-lights two aspects of our work: creating order, and restoring order.

Phase 1: Create order by converting a small bedroom into a walk-in master closet

Phase 2: Restore order to a well-designed space that’s gotten out of control

After months of unsuccessful attempts at making the existing closet space in an older home work efficiently, we were called in to help. During the initial observation and assessment, we proposed a new solution: convert a small bedroom into a walk-in closet. After getting over some initial hesitation, the client agreed it was the best option and we went to work creating order . . .

Sorting clothes by type: shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, accessories (shoes, belts, scarves, purses), etc. During this process we also got rid of items not needed. Check out my favorite place to donate: Arc’s Value VillageHelpful tip: Learn to use the power of no.

Grouping items by how they would be stored in the new closet area: short hanging (button-down shirts, pants, skirts), long hanging (dresses, suits), folded on shelves (sweaters) , and folded in drawers (work-out clothes, jeans, shorts, knit shirts, pajamas)

Measuring. Determine the linear hanging and shelving space needed based on the actual items that will be stored in the closet.

Designing the closet. This is quite easy when you’ve done the other work first.

Purchasing and installation. Don’t forget to replace broken hangers.

Putting everything away . . . Yay! It’s done!

But life takes its toll. Over time, closets get unruly and have to be restored to order.

So we returned to help restore order quickly. After just a few hours, we transformed a cluttered mess . . .

to a well-ordered clothing domain!

Everything has a place.

Things are grouped by type and color, making it more efficient to select and put away items.

Two essentials: a laundry basket and a waste basket keep things tidy.
